Cancer surgery in Kerala

Cancer is one dreaded word for everyone. For most solid organ cancers (,i.e, cancers in different organs other than cancers like blood cancers) surgery is important part of treatment.But unfortunately cancer surgery is not a branch available everywhere.In the state of Kerala ,which is has got highest standards as far as medical care facilities are concerned.,it is a shame that apart from few trained Gastrosurgeons, most cancers are operated by general surgeons , who do not have enough experience in cancer surgery.Surgical oncology is one speciality which is not known by many even qualified doctors.At present there are only few cancer surgery facilities in few cancer centres in Kerala.The main reason for this is none of the universities in Kerala, run super speciality courses in cancer surgery.As a result there are not enough cancer surgeons in Kerala , who are trained to treat cancers.This results in huge overcrowding in existing cancer centres and even then majority of cancers are being treated by general surgeons.The only remedy is to start super speciality programmes in Cancer surgery. Till then people should be ready to get surgery done at cancer centres for cancers and suspected cancers.
